New research reveals that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals buying such drugs must be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors propose the way of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened regain.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts stress that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural support.
