Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Each time a major awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a demand for introducing additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would board games, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
