Individuals who endured abuse by Catholic clergy have voiced renewed hope following their initial meeting with Pope Leo at the Holy See.

The board president, heading Ending Clergy Abuse, commented that the pontiff's choice to engage with them so soon in his leadership sent a strong message about his commitment to tackling the issue.

Global Zero-Tolerance Policy Advocated

The group is pushing for a worldwide zero-tolerance policy that would defrock any priest who confesses to or is found guilty of sexually abusing a child. This policy has already been adopted in the United States.

The Pontiff recognized that there is "opposition in some parts of the world" to this initiative, according to the representative.

"We were all being realistic when we recognized that there is resistance," they remarked.

Legacy Challenge

The new Pope, who assumed the role in May, has taken on this persistent problem that has plagued the Catholic Church for decades.

Earlier attempts to address the problem included an historic meeting on paedophilia within the Church and revisions to church laws to clearly outlaw abuse.

Deeply Felt Connection

For Hickey, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, the drive for worldwide adoption of the measure is deeply meaningful. The Canadian advocate revealed they were abused by a clergy member who was subsequently moved between various churches.

"We trust this will establish the direction for his papacy, because we aim to collaborate with him," Hickey expressed. "Both sides share the same goal, we seek to end clergy abuse."

Historic Encounter

Multiple representatives of the organization, which includes victims and advocates from more than 30 countries, engaged with the Pope in his Vatican office.

The discussion, initially planned for a brief period, lasted to a full hour, during which the religious leader "mostly listened to us," according to the representative.

The Pope was described as "very understanding" when hearing the story of a female survivor abused at a church-run institution for native youth in Canada.

They noted the leader was "compassionate" about their own experience and seemed "very humble, funny, and approachable."

"Survivors have consistently sought a voice in discussions and I didn't perceive like he was giving us lip service," Hickey commented. "I felt like he was sincere, realistic, and receptive and eager to collaborate with us."

Church Regulations Changes

The group is hoping that revisions to church regulations will facilitate the implementation of the zero-tolerance policy worldwide.

They have consulted specialists and gathered documents that they will submit to the pontiff.

"He appeared interested in reviewing it," they remarked.

Responsibility Emphasized

A recently released church-ordered report emphasized the "necessity of a efficient process for the resignation and/or dismissal of Church leaders or staff in cases of misconduct or negligence."

The document also pointed out that survivors repeatedly stressed the "critical requirement for bishops and major superiors to be made responsible for inaction and concealment."

Moving Forward

The representative shared they told the Pope at the beginning of their meeting: "This is as much a challenge for him to engage in a dialogue as it was for us."

After the encounter, they voiced hope for progress.

"We understand it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the conclusion, uniting and building a connection and persisting to strengthen that relationship is a move in the correct path," Hickey commented.

Hickey added that they shared with Pope Leo: "Even though it's a difficult period, I believe like we can change how the narrative ends - he appreciated that."
