Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.
Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.
Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.
"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.
"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll reassess."
Injury History
He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.
He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from three Australian summers in a limited period.
He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the contest.
He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.
Contingency Plans
Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.
The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.
The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."
"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
