One Piece Ends a Quarter-Century Tradition in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of non-canon storylines. Starting in January, after the Egghead Island arc concludes, the anime will take a quarterly hiatus until spring, when the next major arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, the series will produce two seasons every annually for a cap of 26 episodes. The studio explains this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” However, producers conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which suggests more One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime had a half-year pause that began in October 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to improve the animation quality and let the comic to get further ahead to prevent a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to supply fans with countless fight scenes, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While a few summary installments appeared during the recent run, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the occasional interruption in the story. This additionally allows the original work, which is currently in the middle of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the anime. According to the announcement, this may result in one episode of the anime adapting one chapter, with some alternatively covering more material or additional to compensate for time.

This concludes of an era for anime, as the epic saga is the last big series to abandon the traditional method of creation, which prioritized being on air for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Naruto, and naturally One Piece have so many filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between installments and the next. Nowadays, anime production is organized in cours, with one or two maximum coming out each annually, enabling better quality and more faithfulness to the original work.
