Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
