Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, following the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special entering this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term future in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There is no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
