Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
